Rango (2011)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 107m
Director: Gore Verbinski
Cast: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy
Synopsis:
A suburban lizard is 'liberated' from his tank in a near miss on the Interstate, and finds himself in the Nevada desert standing up for a town of miserable rodents and their rapacious Mayor, who has appropriated all the water for his own dastardly purposes.
Review:
Psychedelic animated feature, like a cross between a Dollars western and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The serendipitous humour and imaginative flair are more than enough to sustain interest in a more or less foregone conclusion narrative-wise. There is even a Spirit of the West figure, drawn and voiced convincingly like Clint Eastwood, and the Mayor's - and the plot's - resemblance to Chinatown can be no accident!
