Country: GB
Technical: col 115m
Director: James Ivory
Cast: Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Daniel Day-Lewis, Simon Callow, Judi Dench, Rosemary Leach, Rupert Graves

Synopsis:

On holiday in Florence Lucy Honeychurch meets blunt and idealistic George Emerson, who soon presses home his advances. Back home in Surrey she accepts a proposal from sniffy Cecil Vyse, but fate determines to throw George across her path one more time.

Review:

A wonderfully calculated entertainment from a slight novel, which struck a chord at the time and heralded a profusion of so-called 'heritage' productions featuring costumes, old motor cars and correct English delivered intelligibly. Several great character actors overact outrageously to offset the wooden leads, but it all works delightfully well, served up with Puccini and ornate chapter headings.
