The Quiet American (2002)

£0.00

(Der stille Amerikaner)

Country: US/GER
Technical: col/scope 101m
Director: Phillip Noyce
Cast: Michael Caine, Brendan Fraser, Do Thi Hai Yen

Synopsis:

Saigon, 1952: with the French losing the war with the Communist North-Vietnamese, and a growing terrorist war in the making, the Times correspondent makes the acquaintance of a callow member of the American legation doing medical work, who proceeds to save his life and steal his Vietnamese mistress. All, however, in true Harry Lime fashion, is not what it seems.

Review:

Ineffably superior in matters of prodution to the Mankiewicz original, this remake also seems to make fewer compromises with the unsavoury political realities of Greene's analysis. In Caine's performance we have a welcome return to this territory for the actor who is peculiarly suited to playing characters of compromised morality. Highly vivid filmmaking and another politically charged work from this director.
