Genet's novel of a bisexual serial killer is turned into Fassbinder's last film via what some have termed a betrayal of the original work's substance. It is bathed in rich ochres and yellows and unspools dozens of feet of footage trained on the sweating torsos of its cast, and would seem to be about pushing sexual boundaries as a route to identity or some such twaddle.
