Quand j'étais chanteur (2006)

£0.00

Country: FR/BEL
Technical: col 113m
Director: Xavier Giannoli
Cast: Gérard Depardieu, Cécile de France, Mathieu Amalric, Christine Citti

Synopsis:

A crooner of sentimental classics working in Clermont Ferrand meets a recently separated single mother estate agent who has bonding problems with her small son. After a one night stand he woos her on the pretext of her finding him a house, but she is initially resistant to his advances.

Review:

An important project for Depardieu in the autumn of his career, marking a break from super-productions and a return to small films with the emphasis on character. The scope of the piece is certainly modest, freshening up its familiar scenario of an ageing lothario having one last chance at happiness (cf. Venus) with the subplot-cum-theme of the 'bals de province'-style dance halls and their fading artistes, who nevertheless sing from the heart. The star is unparallelled in that fatigued 'mal de vivre' act he is required to deliver here, and he does okay in the songs too. Not a film, perhaps, at which to come and replenish your cup but a fascinating one nonetheless.
