The Producers (2005)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 134m
Director: Susan Stroman
Cast: Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Uma Thurman

Synopsis:

A once-successful Broadway producer on a run of bad luck is given the idea for a money spinner by his timid accountant: oversell shares in a sure-fire failure and take off with the loot when it closes.

Review:

Brooks's own musical version of one of his most successful films, before satire gave way to parody, is certainly an energetic affair. Not all the numbers are up to much but enough of them are, and the mise en scene and scoring have a nostalgic air quite at odds with some of the lyrics and the less than tasteful concepts (e.g. sleeping with old ladies to secure backing). The cast is excellent but it is Lane who carries all before him, every inch a showman. It is a pity the camp episode is somewhat overdone, descending into kitsch rather than sauciness.
