The Postman (1997)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: Technicolor/Panavision 178m
Director: Kevin Costner
Cast: Kevin Costner, Will Patton, Larenz Tate, Olivia Williams

Synopsis:

In the America of the future, government has vanished and small settlements exist at the mercy of a trained army of terrorists whose general has delusions of grandeur and a philosophy of eugenics. He is challenged by a drifter-cum-deserter from the force who sets up a postal service to re-establish a semblance of order.

Review:

Continuing along the furrow ploughed in Dances with Wolves and Waterworld, this epitome of self-lionization contains some dazzlingly large-scale set pieces and an appealing central philosophy (communication maketh man) but never quite justifies its length or portentousness. That said, as an expensive personal folly it is hard to resist. Interestingly, at the training camp the brutalised soldiers are offered Universal Soldier as cinema entertainment but every night clamour for The Sound of Music instead!
