The editor of the Washington Post fights to convince the newspaper's owner that they must publish the Pentagon Papers (as they would come to be known), when the New York Times is restrained from continuing to do so by the White House.
Review:
As an episode in investigative journalism the movie does not have the conspiracy thriller vibe of All the President's Men, to which it nods with its break-in epilogue, nor the sense of immediacy, as if 'from the headlines'. The cover-up was, however, perhaps even more shocking in its implications than Nixon's overweaning ambition to get re-elected, and Spielberg at points successfully conveys the gravitas of history getting made, ever the slick professional with premium resources at his command. Some may blanche at the central representation of a feminine character who for the most part appears paralysed into inaction.
