The Pornographer (2001)

(Le pornographe)

Country: FR/CAN
Technical: col 108m
Director: Bertrand Bonello
Cast: Jean-Pierre Léaud, Jérémie Renier, Dominique Blanc

Synopsis:

A burnt-out director of porn films from the post-68 era gets new work but finds his ideas accord ill with the commercial demands of his producer. He then renews contact with his estranged son, who falls out with an idealistic young political movement adopting mutism as its means of protest to embark on an idyllic love affair. Finally he leaves his wife out of self-disgust and plans to build a house on a piece of land offered him by a wealthy friend.

Review:

Episodic portrait of a prudish pornographer who finally opens up and talks about his life and work to a reporter after the trauma of leaving his wife and a life of ease. It doesn't have as much to say about the nature of pornography, and the porn business then and now, as one might expect, but fell foul of the BBFC to the tune of eleven seconds of facial come-shot. Notable for a late performance by its iconic star, whose face conjures the very era with which the film obliquely concerns itself.
