Public Enemies (2009)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw/col/2.35:1 140m
Director: Michael Mann
Cast: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard

Synopsis:

1934, Mid West: bank robbers such as John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson amass popular support despite their violent methods, and the FBI adopts similarly ruthless tactics in its efforts to bring them to book, usually involving killing them. Two men, Dillinger and FBI man Melvin Purvis, are the focus of this vigorous retread of events culminating in the former's death outside a cinema showing Manhattan Melodrama.

Review:

The problem with this handsomely mounted and dramatically cogent gangster pic is that in his latest attempt to show the similarities between crook and cop (Heat, Miami Vice) Michael Mann forgot the crucial ingredient of character. Consequently two quite charismatic actors have nothing much to do except look pinched and mean most of the time. Bouquets go to Cotillard in the inevitable woman-in-the-middle role.
