Prospero's Books (1991)

£0.00

Country: NL/FR/IT
Technical: col 120m
Director: Peter Greenaway
Cast: John Gielgud, Michael Clark, Michel Blanc, Erland Josephson, Isabelle Pasco

Synopsis:

An exiled Duke conjures a storm to entrap his former oppressors, and looks on in bewilderment as his innocent daughter appears bewitched by these godlike apparitions.

Review:

Greenaway himself conjures a good many naked spirits to people his island, but allows the key players to keep their dignity (uncharacteristic of him). Meanwhile he has Gielgud read all the parts! The result is nothing if not quirky, and yet the gambit of being rocked by the actor's round tones, like the peculiar music of that isle, pays off.
