Princess Mononoke (1997)

£0.00

(Mononoke-hime)

Country: JAP
Technical: col 134m
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Cast: Yôji Matsuda, Yuriko Ishida, Yûko Tanaka

Synopsis:

Having killed a marauding demon boar threatening his village, a young man journeys to the mountains in search of the forest spirit so that he can be cured of his wounds. On the way he encounters a town of industrious women metallurgists and their queen, who seeks to destroy the forest spirit. He also meets a young princess and foundling raised by mountain dogs, who will stop at nothing to defend him.

Review:

With its herds of boars and packs of dogs, an environmental message about preserving the forest, and a feminist radical battling against samurai on the one hand and natural forces on the other, Miyazaki's comic strip world of choice here is nothing if not embroiled. Execution is as polished as ever, though a little less attractive than usual, the gore is full-on, but the characters end up being underdeveloped.
