Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)

£0.00

Country: GB/US
Technical: col/2.35:1 108m
Director: Burr Steers
Cast: Lily James, Sam Riley, Jack Huston, Matt Smith, Sally Phillips, Lena Headey

Synopsis:

A zombie pestilence stalks Georgian England, and Netherfield is no exception, so Mr Bennet has taken the precaution of sending his daughters to China to be schooled in the martial arts. Colonel Darcy, meanwhile, is a merciless Van Helsing figure, too preoccupied to be in search of a wife, until, that is, he meets Elizabeth Bennet.

Review:

The problem with this potty premise is that, as with the film's title, it sits atop a perfectly acceptable version of the novel for the screen. Even down to Darcy's dip in the ornamental lake, you can tick off the P&P moments with satisfied anticipation, particularly those involving Matt Smith's colourful Parson Collins, only to be interrupted by some spectacular zombie action, before you rejoin the main narrative. It adds nothing to the romantic frisson of the central pairing to have them discover themselves equals in combat, except perhaps for one deliciously choreographed cut and thrust in the cottage, and the zombies have no discernible metaphoric force. It is good clean fun, though.
