Pride (2014)

£0.00

Country: GB/FR
Technical: col/2.35:1 119m
Director: Matthew Warchus
Cast: Ben Schnetzer, George MacKay, Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy, Dominic West, Paddy Considine

Synopsis:

During the 1985 miners' strike, a gay pride activist drums up support for a mining community in South Wales and, after a struggle for acceptance, their solidarity is ultimately reciprocated.

Review:

Fitting into a well-ploughed furrow of British social issue feelgood comedy, this film is a shade more serious in tone than most, and probably has most in common with Brassed Off. The named cast are uniformly fine, but are present, one senses, to secure the investor pounds more than anything; it is the unknown band of 'gays' that make the biggest impression, not unlike their brethren in Four Weddings and a Funeral, but with a social conscience to replace the schmaltzy toffs at play stuff. In sum, it won't surprise you, but nor does it grate, and the fact that it is based on truth helps.
