Pola X (1999)

£0.00

Country: FR/GER/JAP/SW
Technical: col 134m
Director: Leos Carax
Cast: Guillaume Depardieu, Katerina Golubeva, Catherine Deneuve, Delphine Chuillot

Synopsis:

The son of a famous diplomat has gained a cult following thanks to his first novel. As he embarks on a sequel he is troubled by a strange gypsy-like woman claiming to be his illegitimate half-sister; he abandons his fiancée and mother to be with her in squalor and refashions his novel accordingly. But in reaching after authenticity he becomes a failure.

Review:

Its title an acronym of the French title of the Melville source material (Pierre ou les ambiguïtés), this patience-testing exercise in mystification typical of its director (just as it demystifies its hero) contains scenes of some beauty and power. It also features a scene of dimly lit incestuous coupling which would never have passed uncut before recent developments in the (non-)censorship of arthouse films.
