Plenty (1985)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 124m
Director: Fred Schepisi
Cast: Meryl Streep, Charles Dance, Tracey Ullman, John Gielgud, Sam Neill

Synopsis:

A woman who lives adventure during the Second World War among the French resistance finds it hard to adjust to life's disappointments in the two decades after the war, where she ruthlessly pursues what she wants but finds that prosperity does not necessarily bring fulfilment.

Review:

There is little cohesion in the story, despite attempts to mingle past and present, little help in knowing where geographically we are at any given moment, and little identification with the central mixed-up character, though it is a splendid, note-perfect performance by Streep. Hare uses her to project his critique of the English, and so she is not meant to be sympathetic. The supporting cast is excellent, with Dance, Gielgud and Ullman particularly making the little they have to do count the most, but all told this has to be a less satisfactory piece of filmed Hare than Wetherby or Paris By Night.
