Country: BEL
Technical: col 72m
Director: Laura Wandel
Cast: Maya Vanderbeque, Günter Duret, Karim Leklou, Laura Verlinden

Synopsis:

When they arrive at a new school, the son and daughter of a single father find their relationship under intolerable strain as a consequence of the boy's persecution by his peers.

Review:

Like her compatriots the Dardenne brothers, Wandel films close up and in shallow focus, the fulcrum being the little girl whose response to her brother's bullying is always emotional, always heartfelt, but not always open or well timed. As a portrait of two dreadfully unhappy children (and don't they do well?) it is incredibly moving and one presumes not so uncommon. One is transported back to a world of childhood in which adults appear ever so unreachable and learning can be the least significant act of the day.
