Platoon (1986)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 120m
Director: Oliver Stone
Cast: Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Charlie Sheen, Forest Whitaker

Synopsis:

A new recruit in Vietnam writes letters back to his grandmother recounting his experiences.

Review:

The first film really to grasp the nettle of Vietnam and treat it in other than a jingoistic, allusive or emblematic way. It also dares to resurrect some classic war-movie motifs (cf. A Walk in the Sun, Attack!): the platoon on walkabout, good sergeant-bad sergeant. Otherwise a terrifyingly realistic depiction of the confusion and mayhem of combat, counterpointed by beautiful shots of the jungle. The casting of Sheen is undoubtedly a reference to his diary-keeping father in Apocalypse Now.
