Planet of the Apes (2001)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: DeLuxe/Panavision 120m
Director: Tim Burton
Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Kris Kristofferson, David Warner, Charlton Heston

Synopsis:

An astronaut follows his chimp trainee into an electro-magnetic storm and finds himself catapulted hundreds of years into the future of a distant planet where apes vie over annihilating or protecting humans.

Review:

Artfully re-plotted (though the twist ending makes little sense) and impeccably designed remake; the technical improvements are only to be expected and the script loses much of its moral weight and dramatic tension (partly through familiarity but also through over-concentration on Roth's consuming hatred of humans and Bonham Carter's corresponding love of one at least). In the light of this, Wahlberg makes a singularly uninspiring protagonist. Admirers of the director will find some sparse signs of his personal imaginative stamp.
