Planet of the Apes (1968)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 119m
Director: Franklin J. Schaffner
Cast: Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans

Synopsis:

3978: astronauts crashland on a far-flung planet where upright, articulate Apes rule over dumb Humans.

Review:

A classic of Science Fiction, with a simple message that is subtly pointed and a literate script punctuated by thrilling action and social comment. It gave rise to four movie sequels (Beneath, Escape from, Conquest of and Battle for... all qv.) and a TV series, and, more importantly, re-invigorated the genre from the Communist fear-driven invasion films of the 50s to serious contemplations of human destiny: the post-holocaust world was itself to become a cliché. The ape make-up by John Chambers and Goldsmith's score are first-rate. Schaffner, himself from TV, brings a voguish, psychedelic feel to the film, with zooms and shakes offsetting the glossy wide-screen images, and superstar Heston confers commercial acceptability on the enterprise.
