Long before Disney got the blend right, Polanski misstepped with this hugely expensive flop, which tends to happen when you build a Spanish galleon and everyone else is making Sci-Fi. On its own terms it is not too bad, with Matthau hamming it up admirably and a director with a sense of the visionary.
