Pinocchio (1940)

Country: US
Technical: col 77m
Director: Ben Sharpsteen, Hamilton Luske
Cast: animated

Synopsis:

A toymaker dreams of having a child and a kind fairy grants his wish by bestowing life on one of his puppets. But Pinocchio must learn the value of honesty and courage before he can truly be called a boy.

Review:

Magically drawn and animated children's cautionary fable, with an immortal piece of characterisation in the shape of Jiminy Cricket, a sort of chorus/mentor figure. It contains some pretty harrowing images even now, not least the sequence in which boys who have strayed are herded as donkeys into captivity, and generally looks amazing for its age, though the saccharine anthropomorphism of cat and fish has dated now.
