Pierrepoint (2005)

£0.00

(The Last Hangman)

Country: GB
Technical: col 90m
Director: Adrian Shergold
Cast: Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson, Eddie Marsan

Synopsis:

The story of Albert Pierrepoint, the man who hanged 608 condemned, among them the Nuremberg war criminals and Ruth Ellis. The makers underline his professionalism and common humanity.

Review:

A dispassionate, exhaustively detailed portrait of the business end of the justice system as was. Unlike in A Short Film about Killing, where one's hand was somewhat forced by the film making, one is left free to retain one's own ideas governing the death penalty. The fact that it all had an effect on the poor man employed to carry out the sentence is hardly surprising, and Spall's performance is nothing short of superb.
