Paris, 13th District (2021)

£0.00

(Les Olympiades, Paris 13e)

Country: FR
Technical: bw/col 105m
Director: Jacques Audiard
Cast: Lucie Zhang, Makita Samba, Noémie Merlant, Jehnny Beth

Synopsis:

The lives of a high school teacher on sabbatical, a promiscuous Japanese call centre employee, a mature student and a web cam model intersect in Paris's southeastern high rise district.

Review:

Ophüls, Arcand, Rohmer, all come to mind viewing Audiard's relationship tale for our times, as characters have sex first, and ask questions later (as one of them puts it), or strike up liaisons over the internet; anything but commitment. Except that is secretly what they crave. In a sense there is nothing new here, though the handling is fresh, as are the performances, and as usual with Audiard it is well paced. The key thing is that it engages with life in the capital, or sex anyway, as it is now, and merits its place alongside L'amour à vingt ans and La maman et la putain.
