Parasite (2019)

(Gisaengchung)

Country: KOR
Technical: col/2.39:1 132m
Director: Bong Joon Ho
Cast: Kang-ho Song, Sun-kyun Lee, Yeo-jeong Jo, Woo-sik Choi

Synopsis:

A family living in the lower depths of the city gains access to a wealthy family's household, thanks to their son's passing himself off as a tutor to their teenage daughter. However, things start to come unstuck when the family goes away for the weekend, and the deposed housekeeper makes an unscheduled return.

Review:

This clever satire became a phenomenal success worldwide and was the first foreign language film to win the Best Picture Oscar. Quite how it managed to please both the Cannes judges and the Academy is anyone's guess, but may be due to several factors: a flat year, a change in political awareness, and Joon Ho's characteristic blend of humanity and callousness that this time has as its vehicle a pseudo-urban comedy. One is reminded of both Le Tartuffe and Theorem, of course, but here the light and the dark are never far apart.
