Beautifully shot and satisfyingly constructed along now familiar lines; where in High Plains Drifter Eastwood appeared to be an avenging spirit, here he is touted as Death himself, though as before there are red herrings. As in Josey Wales a rugged portrait of frontier life both picturesque and chilly, with nods to The Omen and Once Upon a Time in the West.
