Pain & Glory (2019)

(Dolor y gloria)

Country: SP
Technical: col 113m
Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Cast: Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz, Asier Etxeandia, Julieta Serrano

Synopsis:

A film director suffering from a debilitating illness looks back on his childhood and relationship with his mother, in addition to which two former lovers come back into his life.

Review:

Many of the themes that have preoccupied the director's mature work return here: the village and mother figures, his relationship with drugs, his bisexuality, reverence for his cinematic idols (Sirk, Minnelli, Fassbinder). It is all a question of taste: if you love what he does, there is much to admire here, not least a totally committed Banderas performance. On the other hand, you may feel you have been here once too many times and will be merely entertained.
