Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1964)
(The Umbrellas of Cherbourg)
Country: FR/GER
Technical: col 92m
Director: Jacques Demy
Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Anne Vernon, Nino Castelnuovo
Synopsis:
A mechanic falls in love with the girl in the umbrella shop, but her mother has her eye on a more desirable match. When the Algerian War intervenes she is left pregnant and with little choice.
Review:
Following on from the success of Lola and La baie des anges, Demy and composer Michel Legrand together conceived this romantic singspiel, part Hollywood musical and part something more down-to-earth and French. Some of the sung dialogue has an archly prosaic quality to it that raises a titter, and in truth there is only really one tune worth the name, which does rather get worn to death, and yet the film is a wonderful time capsule of a more innocent time, or image of a time, and the use of colour, styling and décor is carefully studied.
