(The Father of My Children)

Country: FR/GER
Technical: col 110m
Director: Mia Hansen-Love
Cast: Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Chiara Caselli, Alice de Lencquesaing, Alice Gautier, Manelle Driss

Synopsis:

Life for independent film producer Grégoire Canvel is a constant juggling of phone calls from family, colleagues, accountants and creditors. When he is not striving to keep the various shoots in operation, he is encouraging new talent or spending time with his wife and daughters. Then, halfway through the film, disaster strikes.

Review:

Beginning rather like a Rohmer or Woody Allen film, with its catchy jazz standard, this gradually turns into a more intimate study of characters in distress à la Pialat or Kahn (Feux rouges). It eschews incident in favour of a pretty detailed and sobering view of how some films get made, and it saves time for the observation that there are some things in life that matter more than the cinema, though I can't think what. Great playing from the family and their faithful friend, Serge (Eric Elmosnino).
