Le paltoquet (1986)

£0.00

Country: FR
Technical: col 92m
Director: Michel Deville
Cast: Jeanne Moreau, Michel Piccoli, Fanny Ardant, Daniel Auteuil, Claude Piéplu, Jean Yanne, Richard Bohringer, Philippe Léotard

Synopsis:

A man about to leave his factory destined for demolition has fantasised himself as proprietor of a seedy bar therein, master of ceremonies for a whodunnit drama in which all those involved in his real life play a part.

Review:

Extremely arty and self-reflexive film (we do not know the truth about the Piccoli character, at once aloof and beneath contempt, until the end); like most films about film-making it does not really have a lot to help those of us down on planet Earth, but diverts with its technique and amuses with its very twisted sense of humour. Amongst other things the use of non-diegetic music is parodied, and eschewed, by having Piccoli actuate it whenever needed via his tacky gramophone: thus Dvorák and Janacek become knowing, diegetic comments on the action. Sample dialogue: Yanne (as a police inspector), 'Tu as remarqué? Mon pied de flic dans la flaque a fait floc.'
