La pianiste (2001)

£0.00

(The Piano Teacher)

Country: FR/ST/GER
Technical: col 131m
Director: Michael Haneke
Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Annie Girardot, Benoît Magimel

Synopsis:

A piano teacher at the Vienna Conservatoire has an over-protective mother and a father in an insane asylum; sexually frigid and masochistic, she subjects her pupils to emotional and physical abuse. It is only when a technology student with considerable talent joins her class and pays court to her that her clearly delineated sphere of control risks being turned upside down.

Review:

A shocking and absorbing pyschological portrait which confounds expectations in its resolution of the central affair, and leaves one with the impression of an intellect so terrified of yielding to sentiment that when self-abasement is rejected as a token of love her entire psyche crumbles from the self-exposing emotional appeal that ensues. Superb acting, but a poor soundtrack for so much great music.
