A Private Function (1984)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 94m
Director: Malcolm Mowbray
Cast: Michael Palin, Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Richard Griffiths, Liz Smith, Jim Carter, Bill Paterson, Pete Postlethwaite, Alison Steadman

Synopsis:

Just after the Second World War, inhabitants of a Yorkshire town are feeling the pinch of rationing and are at the mercy of the zeal of their local meat inspector. Meanwhile the great and good of the community are planning a dinner in honour of the Royal Wedding, nurturing a pig at a conniving farmer's property, but are wrong-footed by the bravado of the new chiropodist spurred on by his ambitious wife.

Review:

More a snapshot of British society after the war than a satisfying comedy as such (no one really changes, nor does the status quo). But there is a host of British talent on display in a range of well chosen roles, next to whom the star seems oddly straight and lacklustre. Bennett never lets an opportunity slip to shock or repel at all costs!
