A Private Conversation (1983)

(Bez Svidetelei/Without Witnesses)

Country: USSR
Technical: col 96m
Director: Nikita Mikhalkov
Cast: Mikhail Ulyanov, Irina Kupchenko

Synopsis:

A divorcé pays a call on his ex-wife at her flat, and there follows a two-sided rumination over their past relationship and what went wrong.

Review:

Mikhalkov spices up what could be a rather dour piece of drama with free use of interior monologue effects, such as spotlighting his players, and plenty of volte-faces in this confrontation between a divorced couple, completed by a surprise twist at the end. The inclusion of photographs and extracts from Gluck's Orpheus recalls similar effects with Bellini's Casta Diva in Oblomov, and the acting is exemplary.
