A Prairie Home Companion (2006)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 105m
Director: Robert Altman
Cast: Woody Harrelson, L.Q. Jones, Tommy Lee Jones, Garrison Keillor, Kevin Kline, Lindsay Lohan, Virginia Madsen, John C. Reilly, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin

Synopsis:

The swan song of a popular radio institution consisting of a musical, strongly country veined, variety show is introduced to us by a would-be private eye and stalked by an attractive angel of death, who ultimately takes out the axeman.

Review:

Film noir referencing, irreverent, death-defiant swan song for Altman himself, as it turned out. A sobering thought as one enjoys his leisurely paced progression of eavesdropped dialogue scenes, star musical turns and jokey homages to the private eye genre. The compere for the show (Keillor), steering much of his own material, is a particularly impressive find, a sort of Henry Gibson character turn, and the cowboys, Rusty and Lefty, are affectionately played by Harrelson and Reilly. Streep sings well and it all has the feel of a relaxed company effort, as befits the story context.
