The Other Side of Hope (2017)

£0.00

(Toivon tuolla puolen)

Country: FIN/GER
Technical: col 100m
Director: Aki Kaurismäki
Cast: Sherwan Haji, Sakari Kuosmanen, Kaija Pakarinen, Tuomari Nurmio

Synopsis:

A Syrian stowaway arrives in Finland claiming asylum, and a travelling shirt salesman wipes his own slate clean to go into the restaurant business. A country band sings of solidarity in the face of the unyielding earth.

Review:

The director's second meditation on the need for kindness towards our fellow human beings from the south is a twin stranded narrative that takes its time to come together. The familiar hallmarks are there - deadpan performance, high key lighting, pastel walls, fixed camera with precisely composed shots - but with a new pessimism: characters are either wholly good or bad, and there does not seem a lot to be done about it.
