The Outsiders (1983)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 91m
Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Cast: Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell
Synopsis:
The gang landscape of an American town is contested by the northern 'Greasers' and the southern 'Socials', roughly along economic lines. Trouble mounts between the rival gangs when a Greaser kills a Social in self-defence.
Review:
Based on S.E. Hinton's novel, Coppola's determinedly small-scale venture, that also produced Rumble Fish, is very much like a Rebel without a Cause with a more poetic, soulful approach as opposed to middle-class soulsearching. It is immaculately made, and the younger boys, Macchio and Howell, give admirable performances, but it is in the end all a bit too poised.
