Our Kind of Traitor (2016)

Country: GB/FR
Technical: col/2.35:1 107m
Director: Susanna White
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgård, Naomie Harris, Damian Lewis, Jeremy Northam

Synopsis:

While on holiday in Marrakech, a lecturer is drawn into the confidence of a Russian money launderer who wants to do a deal with the Foreign Office. Before long he finds himself a go-between for him and his family, and a rogue MI6 operative wanting to expose corrupt politicians.

Review:

This timely John Le Carré adaptation posits a Europe on the brink of a nefarious deal with Russia to set up a bank to launder black money more efficiently than organized crime lords could do. McGregor has another go at his 'academic out of his depth' characterization, but Skarsgård steals the show as the profane, ebullient Dima. Anthony Dod Mantle supplies exquisitely wrought images in the close-up, hyper-mobile manner, working magic in reduced light conditions, and Damian Lewis impresses as the clipped and uncompromising agent.
