Othello (1995)

£0.00

Country: US/GB
Technical: col 123m
Director: Oliver Parker
Cast: Laurence Fishburne, Irène Jacob, Kenneth Branagh, Nathaniel Parker

Synopsis:

A Moorish commander working for the Venetian navy is hoodwinked by a resentful lieutenant into believing his wife has been unfaithful with one of the other officers.

Review:

There can be little argument with the thespian big guns brought out to do justice to Shakespeare's tragedy of jealousy, but Parker's direction never quite takes flight or transcends the picture's period trappings. The result is a version which, for all its atmosphere and budget, does not deliver the emotional charge of Olivier's filmed National Theatre production.
