Synopsis:

A writer in search of inspiration takes his girlfriend on a night drive, but after an accident they find themselves in a cemetery. There they bear witness to exotic go-go dances by the undead, presided over by the Emperor of the Night and his Vampire-like mistress of ceremonies.

Review:

Only Ed Wood could have dreamt up this kitsch horror classic. Time stands still as we witness nine stripteases with the tease taken out, each with a given theme (the husband killer, the bullfighter's mistress, the snake woman); as they shimmy and jiggle their way through their interminable routines, the editor obliges us with cutaway shots of the onlookers, whose expressions range from mild interest (or are they nodding off, it's hard to tell?) to horror, with hilarious inconsequentiality. The colour looks great, at least after Nicolas Winding Refn's restoration, but the unvarying alternation of long shot and mid-shot grows hypnotically boring. Eroticism is absent until the last five minutes, only to be repressed by the triumph of a very sudden dawn. The film is of interest as one of the standout examples of the 'nudie cutie', a phenomenon of surpassing innocence before the advent of porn in the Seventies.
