Synopsis:
During World War Two a US submarine officer trying to win back his estranged wife must make her accept that loyalty to his crew comes first.
Review:
The kind of premise one would have thought more appropriate for a wartime movie, especially when the woman's perspective is given such short shrift, but this is a John Wayne movie and a woman's got to put up with what a man's gotta do. Patricia Neal works hard to keep the feminist end up, but it's an uphill struggle. Action highlights are perfunctory and of their time (miniatures and archive footage with the usual grainy mismatch), but there are some superbly lit individual shots on board the vessel. Note: Wayne's character here sports the actor's own handle, 'Duke'.
