On the Beat (1962)
Country: GB
Technical: bw 105m
Director: Robert Asher
Cast: Norman Wisdom, Jennifer Jayne, Raymond Huntley
Synopsis:
Pitkin dreams of being a policeman like his dad, trying on his uniform in front of the mirror, but he is too short. Then, one day, he ventures out, causing pandemonium. A subplot concerns a nefarious Italian hairdresser, also played by Wisdom - and impersonated by Pitkin!
Review:
Perhaps Wisdom's most successful film is the classic double act that Danny Kaye had performed at least once already (On the Double came out the same year). His mincing coiffeur act is a pleasure to behold as he gets the walk right, and the finale is a homage to Buster Keaton's Cops.
