Onegin (1999)

Country: GB/US
Technical: col 106m
Director: Martha Fiennes
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Liv Tyler, Toby Stephens

Synopsis:

A bachelor aristocrat leaves St Petersburg to attend to his dying uncle and finds himself inheriting the estate and befriending a local poet. However, his aloofness leads to disaster for those around him and unhappiness for himself.

Review:

Lush, operatic filming of a melancholy classic of unconsummated love. All smouldering looks and decorative compositions, it manages to stay within the boundaries of tastefulness compared with the likes of Bernard Rose's Anna Karenina. Fiennes acts well of course; Tyler impresses. (A family affair: Magnus Fiennes composed the very discreet music, part Tchaikovsky, part gypsy.)
