The Nest (2020)

£0.00

Country: GB/US
Technical: col 107m
Director: Sean Durkin
Cast: Jude Law, Carrie Coon, Oona Roche, Charlie Shotwell

Synopsis:

A commodities trader in the 1980s returns to his home country, the UK, with his American family, and stakes everything on a vainglorious bid for riches. His family, meanwhile, is sidelined, and cracks begin to emerge in their carefully constructed dream existence amidst Surrey's leafy green belt.

Review:

An examination of yuppiedom's 'get rich quick' philosophy via a character who is unable to settle down, and then paradoxically wants to build his nest on the shakiest possible foundations, this broadly conventional drama of hubris and nemesis is intriguingly packaged with domestic horror and suspense trappings. The atmosphere of rampant consumerism one expects to see recreated is pushed out by the 'Eyes Wide Shut' couple in crisis narrative, just like the hapless children packed off to their very different schools. An oversensitive horse and bumps in the night are mere indexes of 'something rotten' in this estate, and lead nowhere. Acting honours go to Coon, as the all-American girl pushed into starting up her own equestrian business, who becomes the first casualty of her husband's compulsive mission.
