Notorious (1946)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 101m
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Cast: Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Louis Calhern

Synopsis:

The daughter of a German traitor living in America is used by Intelligence services to spy on a group of Nazi expats up to no good in Rio. Unfortunately for her and her enamoured contact this means marrying one of them.

Review:

Outside noted sequences involving a wine cellar key and poisoned coffee this espionage suspenser explores what happens to personal relationships when working for one's country involves sleeping with the enemy. Grant is as mercilessly cruel at times here as his character in Suspicion was through and through, and Bergman is at her best, oozing languid vulnerability. Another point of interest for Hitchcock fans is the strongly dependent relationship of chief villain Rains with his overbearing mother, a theme running through his work from Blackmail to Psycho.
