North Country (2005)

£0.00

Country: US/GER
Technical: Technicolor/scope 126m
Director: Nicola Caro
Cast: Charlize Theron, Frances McDormand, Sean Bean, Woody Harrelson, Sissy Spacek

Synopsis:

A battered wife takes her children to her parents in Minnesota and gets a job at an iron mine amongst a very male-dominated workforce. Their disrespect and abuse of the female minority ultimately lead her to undertake legal action against the company.

Review:

We've been here in other films (Silkwood, Erin Brockovich) and this is in many ways one of those serious pictures that courts Oscars and is quickly forgotten. It does nevertheless have some powerful acting, in particular from Theron, and compelling scenes, along with one or two that grate somewhat. The free chronology employs courtroom scenes early on and at several points before the narrative has reached that stage, besides flashbacks from the character's youth, adding to the interest.
