Ninotchka (1939)

Country: US
Technical: bw 110m
Director: Ernst Lubitsch
Cast: Greta Garbo, Melvyn Douglas, Sig Rumann, Alexander Granach, Felix Bressart

Synopsis:

A beautiful but frigid Soviet party official is despatched to Paris to investigate the bourgeois corruption of the ambassadors there, and falls under the spell of the city while under the tutelage of a handsome American playboy.

Review:

Though the second half is not as good, this is a splendidly fresh and witty sex comedy, encompassing political satire besides. It was the star's first comedy and makes great play of making the audience wait for the fulfilment of its billboard promise: 'Garbo laughs!' Wilder reworked some of the elements in One, Two, Three and it was remade in 1957 as Silk Stockings.
