Nina (2018)

£0.00

Country: POL
Technical: col 130m
Director: Olga Chajdas
Cast: Eliza Rycembel, Julia Kijowska, Andrzej Konopka

Synopsis:

A lesbian airport security guard enjoys a steady relationship with an air stewardess while filling her non-contact time with a series of casual encounters. Then she meets a teacher on the lookout for a surrogate mother and everything changes, for both of them.

Review:

This at times confusingly told drama gathers emotional traction as the magnetism between the lovers takes hold, with neither one assuming precedence over the other in the scheme of things. Chajdas shoots up close, often in reduced light and shallow focus, but the actresses convey much with only lapidary dialogue and Konopka, as the husband, also impresses in an increasingly sidelined role. The social divide is well caught (4x4, Grand Cru Classé), and the school setting provides intriguing glimpses at subtextual level. Along with Sweat and Never Gonna Snow Again (both 2020), this constituted a considerable step forward in Polish cinema.
