Night Tide (1961)
Country: US
Technical: bw 86m
Director: Curtis Harrington
Cast: Dennis Hopper, Linda Lawson, Gavin Muir, Luana Anders
Synopsis:
Venice beach, California: a sailor on leave exploring the amusement pier encounters a strange and beautiful girl who works at the mermaid exhibit with her guardian, a kindly ship's captain. He strikes up a relationship with her, but is warned off by a number of other characters and plagued by obscure dreams and visions.
Review:
The director's first feature is a wonderfully low-key mystery whose heroine is convinced she is a bona fide siren. An impossibly wholesome Hopper strolls about in his spotless sailor's kit, apparently on perpetual shore leave, patting infatuated ride attendants on the head, while Lawson's troubled mermaid fights against the inexorable pull of the night tides. The film contains one of the cinema's finest and most enlightening tarot reading scenes, and retains one unexplained detail to satisfy amateurs of the truly supernatural.
