Münchhausen (1943)

(Baron Munchhausen)

Country: GER
Technical: col 119m
Director: Josef von Báky
Cast: Hans Albers, Brigitte Horney, Wilhem Bendow, Ilse Werner

Synopsis:

In the eighteenth century, a German nobleman joins the Russian army's campaign against the Turks and has a number of increasingly far-fetched ensuing adventures - according to him.

Review:

A remarkable film to come out of Nazi Germany, and unjustly neglected because of that, containing as it does so little of the Nazi ethos. It's more like something Powell and Pressburger might have done, were it not for its occasional crudeness of effect. On the whole, though, it is gloriously Pythonesque and colourful, with adventures, amorous and otherwise, in Russia, Turkey, Venice and on the Moon. One can see what attracted Terry Gilliam to the subject!
