What begins as a theatrical romp built around the outspoken, school matronly Dench character takes a turn for the serious as if it has to when the war starts. And though we have been prepared by visits to a cemetery in Flanders for the doors on an inner life to be flung open, we are not quite ready to hear the fancifully improvised speech about postcards under the bed at the film's climax, which asks us to believe that all this mischievous nudity had a solemn purpose. Still, the first half is great fun.
